Gordo Banks diving site offers a great opportunity to spot some live-action sharks in Cabo.
Itâs the best site for both deepwater dives and pelagic marine animal sightings in Cabo San Lucas.
This is an exceptional experience, not for the faint of heart, so don’t forget your torch weâre going deep.
Gordo Banks is a Seamount that peaks at 125 feet below the surface and drops into the sea bottom. The top of the underwater mountain has huge cracks and canyons, and it attracts fish of all shapes and sizes, making it a unique and memorable experience for divers.
Gordo Banks diving site is famously-known for providing experienced divers with the opportunity to watch sharks in open water, as well as with other pelagic fish like Tuna, Manta Rays, and more.
However, itâs important to note that this is a âhit-or-missâ dive, so you might not spot some of them, but you will spot a wide variety of marine life and experience an awesome deep-water dive.
This is a deep, blue water dive, reserved for advanced, experienced divers.
It requires AOW Certification or higher, experience in deep diving, good health conditions, and previous deep diving with Mantaâs Staff in the Local or Corridor site.
The conditions at Gordo change seasonally, so diving trips are usually from May to January.
Here at Manta, we use NITROX 28% at Gordo Banks so a Nitrox certification is required as well.
NITROX 28% extends the allowable bottom time by up to 60% and at this depth, with the limited bottom time allowed while diving with air, we feel this is the best choice.
If you are not already certified to dive on NITROX, please contact us, and we will advise on the different options for getting Nitrox certification.

Few words about safety:
Safety is a high priority in all our dive tours, all our guides always carry Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) and dive computers, with many years of experience in Gordo Banks we will provide the best tour to this site.
Your day weâll start early. Itâs a-7 hours trip so weâll meet as early as 7:45 AM at the Manta diving facility in the marina, where youâll meet Mantaâs PADI certified Divemasters. After check-in, youâll get ready with gear and weâre off to the boat.
Gordo Banks is located 10 miles offshore from San Jose, so the ride to the site is quite long, approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes each way.
No worries though, the ride is cool and offers a great opportunity to spot fish and occasionally Dolphins and Whales. We anchor precisely so we can descend along the anchor line directly to the top of the Seamount.
Few instructions about safety, communication, and gear from the Manta Divemasters and youâre in the water, going deep.
The descent is made in blue water and the sea mountain is visible only when reaching a depth of 60 ft or more.
Youâll spend most of the time drifting in the water, swimming next to open water fishes of all sorts, from grunts and schools of jacks to Tuna, Manta Rays, and yes, possibly sharks. What a wild experience.
Sharks are the main attractions here but are far from being the only ones. The top of the Seamount is unlike any usual dive site; huge cracks, canyons, black coral, sponges, and other types of sedentary life cover the pinnacle.
On top of that, youâll find vibrant marine life. The variety of fish you can watch here is enormous.
You can spot pelagic fish like Silkies and Mako sharks, humpback whales, hammerheads, Tuna, Rays, and many more. You will most likely also spot huge schools of Jacks, Snappers, big grouper, Grunts making this site an epic one.
âFriendly and Professional Dive Shopâ
We did a 3-day package with Manta Scuba – Local, Corridor and La Paz. The staff were helpful from the very beginning, even before we arrived. By the time we showed up, everything was set up. We just needed to fill out our paperwork and grab wet suits; the gear was already aboard. The boats were comfortable and the rides out ranged depending on where you went, from the Local spots that are just a few minutes from the dock, to La Paz which required a 2hr van ride and an hour on the boat. That last one might sound daunting, but it was worth it – snorkeling with whale sharks and mobula rays, followed by diving with the most playful sea lions I’ve ever seen! They were grabbing at our hair and playfully (I think!) biting our fins. We had different dive masters during our week, and both were outstanding – good pre-dive briefing, helpful with the gear, and – most important – focused on safety. We would definitely recommend Manta Scuba to anyone considering diving in Cabo – easy to get to, small operation, and professional from start to finish. Well done!
âFatastic day diving, great teamâ
Went diving with Manta today. What a fabulous experience. First of all the team, diving equipment, boat were all excellent. Did the three dives – 2 by the Corridor and one locally. Could not have asked for a more enjoyable day. The last 2 included seeing swarms of spotted eagle rays fly above us for what seemed like a very long time, then swimming with sea lions near the arch! The deepest we went was 47 feet. The water temperature on the surface was 70o F, but a 7 mm suit with boots, hood and gloves was adequate to keep me warm. You do need to bring food since the offerings on board a somewhat limited but water is available. So go diving and go with Manta!
